ALL PEOPLE GROUPS. The Driver: "not even loading, takes a very long
time", and its DOXA pins were dark on a dark map.
- It downloaded the 7.5 MB people-groups-slim.json (22 columns) to draw
ten fields. It now fetches people-groups-points.json: the same rows in
column order, repeated strings in dictionaries, coordinates at 3
decimals. 0.74 MB, generated deterministically by
library/scripts/people-groups/build-points.mjs and staged into the tree
by generate-tree. It falls back to the old file on an older tree.
- Pins no longer wait for the live prayer API. Every pin draws by GSEC
from the file, and the DOXA overlay recolours when the API answers. The
DOXA count reads "…" until then, not 0.
- Named style 'paper' (Mapbox light-v11 / MapLibre positron) instead of
'ink'. The four categories keep their meaning; yellow and green are a
step darker, and pins get a thin dark ring, so they read on near-white.
- Its words are in all 11 locales (allPeopleGroups.json), with a guarded
useI18n and values passed to vue-i18n so {n} is not blanked.
Measured on a served built tree, 3 fresh runs each, median time to first
rendered pins: 8.3 s before, 5.2 s after, on localhost. This box renders
GL in software, so most of the remaining time is map start-up; the 10x
smaller download matters more on a real connection.
DOXA VISION CARD. The Driver: "the data doesn't make sense … super false
information". The card rotated four typed-in figures with no source.
It is now a proportional funnel, every number computed from data by
library/scripts/people-groups/build-vision-funnel.mjs:
12,379 people groups (IMB rows: one group in one country)
7,341 unreached (IMB LostnessPriority 0-2, < 2% evangelical)
4,754 frontier (LostnessPriority 0, < 0.1% evangelical)
2,107 DOXA groups (the DOXA prayer list, snapshot saved in data/;
1,745 of them frontier)
The first three nest; DOXA groups do not all sit inside frontier, so the
card says how many do. The rules are on the card ("How these are
counted") and in HOW-THE-NUMBERS-ARE-COUNTED.md, which also explains why
the total is not the 16-17 thousand of Joshua Project's count. Material
light, all 11 locales, right-to-left in Arabic, sources and dates shown.
The old fake stats are removed from the instances file, the frontier
page, the manifest, the staging page and the gallery.
CHECKS.
- check:vision-card-numbers recomputes the funnel independently (own CSV
reader, the published rules) and compares with vision-funnel.json and,
with --url, the rendered bars. Negative-tested: a corrupted count exits
1. On the built tree: bars 12,379 / 7,341 / 4,754 / 2,107 and "1,745 of
them are frontier", all matching.
- check:map-embed-cells measures PRODUCTION-MATRIX cells B and C for the
seven gallery maps on a foreign origin; C proves the host's token is
used by handing the host a distinct token and checking every Mapbox
request. 14 of 14 pass.
THE RECHECK, reported at its real size. Re-asking all 293 Doxa codes the old
title catch-all had defaulted to "none" recovered EIGHT: the rule was wrong
2.7% of the time, not catastrophically. That moves 12 Doxa people groups out of
the gap — 381 to 369 — and each now carries a working Words of Life link. Modest,
and worth saying plainly rather than dressing up: the bug was real, its blast
radius was small, and the fix is that the classifier measures instead of
defaulting.
THE THREE LINES. rega's in-gallery count was right that these are chrome, not
prose: what a dot is, what "none found" does not mean, and that a country is
tappable. They are what a reader needs to use the map AT ALL, so leaving them
English made it unusable rather than merely untranslated. Translated in all
eleven; the long explanatory paragraphs around them stay English and are pinned
dir=ltr where they sit, which is option (b) unchanged.
Not for main yet. All ten views mount on the dev server with real data and no
page errors. Left: the coverage view's status still says 'sample of 6,000',
its choropleth needs checking, and the bundle is not built or tree-verified.
The map got coordinates and a language code by matching each group's NAME
against the pin dataset. That left 285 unplaceable and, worse, unsearchable: no
ISO code is no key to look them up by in any pool, so the access table could only
report them as "not searched" — nobody had been able to ask.
Doxa's own per-group endpoint carries both, and their robots.txt disallows
nothing. /api/people-groups/detail/<slug> gives primary_language and latitude and
longitude for every one: Akha to ahk, Akeu to byo, Alxa Mongols to xal, Ajja to
krs — four the name join had failed. So the name matching is not improved, it is
REMOVED. It was always a guess wearing a join's clothes: Akha in Laos sat beside
Akha Jipea, Akha Jaweuy and Akha Piso in the pins, and any pick among them would
have invented a language for a people. The publisher saying which language their
group speaks ends the guessing.
2,107 of 2,107 placed. Zero without a language code. The "not searched" rung is
gone from the access ladder because nothing is unsearched any more.
The gap grows 281 to 381, and that is the point: those 100 groups were always
without the gospel in their language, and the map could not say so because it did
not know what their language was.
The fetcher runs its controls in band both ways before trusting a record — a real
slug must return a language and coordinates, an impossible one must not — so a
site answering 200 with an empty body could not fill this table with silence.
IMB's own access and engagement fields come along beside ours, never merged into
them, because where two sources disagree that disagreement is worth seeing.
The Driver's question, in their words, is which of THEIR people groups have
gospel resources and which do not. Every tab here answered it for the research
corpus — 12,379 groups across 4,231 languages — which is the right scope for
finding what exists and the wrong one for working a list of 2,107. This one is
one row per group on Doxa's roster, it leads the tabs, and it exports.
The access ladder says what a person can DO, because that is what decides what
you send: read and watch 785 · watch or hear but cannot read 698 · read 53 ·
stories only 5 · nothing found 281. The second rung is the translation brief —
those groups can already receive the gospel and cannot yet study it, so the
first believers among them cannot be trained from a text that does not exist.
NO LANGUAGE CODE IS ITS OWN RUNG. The first run collapsed it into "nothing
found" and reported 566, when 281 had been searched and come back empty and 285
had never been searchable at all — no ISO 639-3, so no pool has a key to look
them up by. That would have told a mobiliser 285 peoples have no gospel in their
language when the truth is nobody has been able to ask. It is an identification
problem before it is a translation one.
CSV carries the filter and the roster: the whole table exports 2,107 rows, China
exports 154, and German exports a header and nothing else because German is not
one of Doxa's groups.
383 of the roster had no coordinates — 18% of Doxa's people invisible on the map
and missing from every count on it. Reading why, rather than reaching for fuzzy
matching, one class turns out to be a spelling convention: the roster puts the
qualifier first and the pin dataset puts it last, around a comma.
Acre Arara <-> Arara, Acre Ashkuni Nuristani <-> Nuristani Ashkuni
Banka Samogho <-> Samogho, Banka Butuo Nosu <-> Nosu, Butuo
Same words, same country, different order. Matching on the sorted token set
absorbs exactly that: 94 recovered, plus 4 that only needed diacritics folded,
and every one resolved to a SINGLE pin inside its own country. Spot-checked
against the languages they landed on — Ashkuni Nuristani to Ashkun [ask] in
Afghanistan, Banka Samogho to Bankagooma [bxw] in Mali — and all 94 carry a
language code, so the resource join holds.
What it refuses is the point. Doxa lists Akha in Laos; the pins carry Akha
Jipea, Akha Jaweuy and Akha Piso — a parent against three sub-varieties, and
picking one would invent a language for a people. Doxa lists Akeu in China; the
nearest pin is Ake, a different language. Two candidates is a refusal, not a
coin toss. 285 still have no candidate at all and stay unplaced, because they
need a source this build does not have rather than a looser string match.
1,822 placed now. The gap grows 268 to 281, which is the join telling the truth.
The map was built on the full 12,379-group dataset. Doxa works the groups on
pray.doxa.life, so a map of everyone buries the ones they can reach and paints
countries by a gap that is not theirs.
The roster is now its own table, from their own API: 2,107 groups across 175
countries, 206 million people. 1,724 join a pin by (name, country) and every one
of those carries an ISO 639-3 code, so the resource join is intact. The other 383
are kept with mapped:false rather than dropped — they are Doxa's groups whether
or not this build can place them yet.
The measurement that settles the colour complaint: 106 of those 175 countries
hold one or two Doxa groups, and the United States holds three. The choropleth
paints a country by the SHARE of its groups with nothing found, so one group of
three turns the whole United States amber. That is the mainly-yellow map, and
underneath it is not a palette problem — it is a percentage over a denominator
of three being drawn as though it meant something. A share is only meaningful in
the 35 countries holding eight or more.
Nothing is lost: every index, verified link and sweep result stays where it is.
Five codes still carried the retired ?languageId= URL, which nothing can verify.
Asking Arclight what each language actually has:
ars Arabic, Najdi The Savior (8 groups; film was their ONLY resource)
gjk Kachi Koli Magdalena - Director's Cut
mzn Mazanderani Magdalena - Director's Cut
lia Limba, West-Central no feature at all
jos Jordanian Sign Lang left alone, see below
counts.featureFilm >= 1 says a feature exists, not that it is JESUS. Three of
these had a real JESUS Film Project film in their own language under a different
title, and the map called all of them the JESUS Film — the same class of lie as
calling Open Bible Stories Scripture. They now ship under their own names, with
verified deep links; lia's film is dropped, because no component carries it and
a link nobody can check is worse than none.
jos is left exactly as it was. Arclight files iso3 jos under a row whose own
name reads Lebanese Sign Language, while the JESUS Film sits at a different id
named Jordanian Sign Language. The ISO join and the publisher's label disagree,
and resolving that is a data question, not a guess to make inside a fetcher.
The two curated figures — growing & unreached, deaths a day — sit under a
footnote saying how much narrower their basis is than the pins. It read "covers
391 of these 391 groups — a narrower set than the pins" for every one of the 242
countries, because the script that recomputes country rows from the pins
overwrote the curated group count with the pin count and the footnote went on
reading it. Always false, and false about the one thing it existed to qualify.
The real numbers were still in the commit that introduced the overwrite and are
restored on the rows: China 158 of 391, India 856 of 2,146. They are recorded
once now and never rewritten, because the pins change every build and a curated
analysis does not.
The same block also drew both figures for the 72 countries that have no curated
row at all — "Est. deaths/day 0", which is not a measurement. It is hidden for
them instead. A first pass at the fix handed those 72 a basis equal to their pin
count, inventing the number the footnote exists to qualify; null now means there
is no curated set here.
The rot sampler now covers 5fish by where its redirect LANDS — a published code
goes to its numbered language page, one they do not carry is swept to /regions —
the same rule the verifier uses, with both arms proved in band. Six links a run,
ten seconds apart, because their robots.txt asks for it. That leaves 94 of 8,510
shipped links outside every re-check, down from 5,760 this morning.
YouVersion is the largest catalogue the brief names and it is now recorded as
rejected, with the measurement: nodejs.bible.com serves it without a key but its
robots.txt is Disallow: / , www.bible.com answers even robots.txt with a bot
wall, and the unauthenticated slice returns 2 English versions against the dozens
that exist — so taking it would be both discourteous and wrong. It is named in
the unchecked list on 5,413 codes instead of being silently absent, because a
reader deciding that a group has nothing is entitled to know which pools nobody
searched.
Batch fourteen closed it — 2,347 language codes decided, 1,022 carrying Words
of Life. Forty groups leave the gap: 1,653 with nothing becomes 1,613, and the
gap breakdown drops from four situations to three, because "GRN not yet swept"
no longer describes anybody. What is left is 1,429 groups where every pool this
build can reach has been searched, 183 sign languages behind key-gated sources,
and one group with no language code at all.
Two things the sweep exposed. 5fish answers 200 for any path, so its 982 links
were being verified by a status that means nothing there; they are now judged by
where the redirect LANDS — a real code goes to its numbered language page, one
they do not carry is swept to /regions — with both arms proved in band before
any link is classified. And country-gap reads a file that another script
refreshes from the pins, so running them out of order publishes the previous
build's numbers: it said 1,653 while the map said 1,613. It now refuses to write
a table that disagrees with the index the map draws.
170 more codes, 57 with gospel audio. 979 codes carry a Words of Life
link and 1,220 people groups whose ONLY resource in any pool is that
recording — 79.4 million people — can hear the gospel in their own
language. Tier 0 is 1,653, from 3,457 when this began.
2,215 of the gap's 2,456 codes are decided. The "not yet swept" bucket
is down to 133 groups, so one more batch ends it, and the breakdown
will then read three situations rather than four — which the sheet was
taught to handle last tick, before it could print "0 groups still
unswept" beside a claim that four situations remained.
Provenance exact: 2,079 name GRN as checked, 2,079 decided, none
decided goes unnamed. All 57 new URLs verified before shipping.
170 more codes, 52 with gospel audio — 31%, against 43% over the first
nine batches. The sweep runs largest-population first, so the tail is
the small and rare languages where GRN is least likely to have
reached; the falling rate is the sweep working through the hard part.
922 codes carry a Words of Life link and 1,158 people groups whose
ONLY resource in any pool is that recording — 79.4 million people —
can hear the gospel in their own language. Tier 0 is 1,715, from 3,457
when this began. 2,045 of the gap's 2,456 codes are decided, 83%.
The shape keeps telling the same story: "GRN not yet swept" has fallen
842 → 660 → 484 → 311, while the real translation gap has risen 887 →
1,220. Groups are not getting worse off; they are moving from a bucket
that meant "we have not looked" into one that means "we looked
everywhere we can reach". That is the number a translator should plan
against, and it only became sayable once the two were separated.
Provenance exact: 1,910 name GRN as checked, 1,910 decided, none
decided goes unnamed. All 52 new URLs verified before shipping.
170 more codes, 73 with gospel audio. 870 codes carry a Words of Life
link and 1,104 people groups whose ONLY resource in any pool is that
recording — 79.3 million people — can hear the gospel in their own
language.
Tier 0 is 1,769, from 3,457 when this began. 1,876 of the gap's 2,456
codes are decided, 76% of the sweep, and the "GRN not yet swept"
bucket has fallen from 842 groups to 484: that share of the gap is
evaporating as the crawl proceeds rather than because anything was
translated, which is why the sheet names it separately.
The real translation gap barely moves by comparison — 1,001 to 1,101
— because groups leaving the unswept bucket mostly land there. That is
the honest shape of this work: the sweep is not shrinking the gap so
much as telling the truth about which part of it is real.
Provenance exact: 1,744 name GRN as checked, 1,744 decided, none
decided goes unnamed. All 73 new URLs verified before shipping.
The map explains that "1,845 groups have nothing" is four situations
wearing one number. An exported copy of the gap table could not say
that at all, which is the copy a translation organisation actually
works from. Each row now carries its kind:
1,001 every reachable pool checked — the real translation gap
660 GRN not yet swept — the crawl is still running
183 sign language — pools are key-gated, an access problem
1 no language code — no pool can index it
Adding it exposed that the two surfaces bucketed differently. The
table tests sign language first; the map tested private-use first, so
47 Deaf groups were filed under "unindexable code" and the Deaf share
read 136 instead of 183. Both were internally honest and they told
different stories, which is worse than either being wrong on its own.
The map now uses the table's order, because being Deaf is the more
actionable fact about those rows than the shape of their code, and it
still says 47 of them are doubly stuck. Both surfaces report 1,001 /
660 / 183 / 1, verified against each other rather than separately.
The meta warns that filtering to sign_language alone is now the whole
Deaf figure and not a subset, since the private-use rows are the same
people.
170 more codes, 62 with gospel audio. 797 codes carry a Words of Life
link and 1,028 people groups whose ONLY resource in any pool is that
recording — 79.2 million people — can hear the gospel in their own
language.
Tier 0 is 1,845, from 3,457 when this began: 1,612 groups moved out of
"nothing found" on verified links. 1,707 of the gap's 2,456 codes are
decided, 70% of the sweep.
The hit rate is falling, and that is the sweep working rather than
failing: 36% this batch against 43% over the first nine. The codes are
probed largest-population first, so the tail is the small and rare
languages where GRN is least likely to have reached — which is exactly
where the remaining gap lives.
Provenance exact — 1,578 name GRN as checked, 1,578 decided, none
decided goes unnamed — and all 62 new URLs verified before shipping.
170 more codes, 78 with gospel audio. 735 codes carry a Words of Life
link, and 960 people groups whose ONLY resource in any pool is that
recording — 79.0 million people — can hear the gospel in their own
language.
Tier 0 is 1,913. It was 3,457 when this work began, so 1,544 people
groups have moved out of "nothing found" on real, verified links.
1,537 of the gap's 2,456 codes are decided, 63% of the sweep, and the
hit rate holds at 43% across nine batches.
Provenance exact — 1,412 name GRN as checked, 1,412 decided, none
decided goes unnamed — and all 78 new URLs verified before shipping.
For 230 people groups the map said "nothing found" and stopped, when
that was not the whole truth: a language already spoken widely in
their country does have Scripture or the film. Kimr in Sudan has
nothing in Assangori; Sudanese Arabic, spoken by 65 groups around
them, has both. That is the difference between no way in and a way in
that is not their heart language.
WORDED SO IT CANNOT BE SKIMMED AS "THEY HAVE SCRIPTURE". The heading
says "Not their language", the body names whose language it is and how
widely it is spoken, the strength is quoted from the source, and the
last line says a second language is a way in and not a translation.
The chips above are untouched and still read "none found" five times,
and the tier is unchanged: 2,001 groups still have nothing of their
own, exactly as before.
Two exclusions, both measured rather than assumed. Fourteen of these
rows offer a DEAF people group a SPOKEN bridge — Gawri "has a film" is
no use to Deaf Pakistanis, the same error as offering them recorded
audio — so sign languages are out. Sixty-five carry the curated
strength "weak — may not be a real lingua franca"; a bridge the source
itself doubts is not an answer, so those are out too.
Placed below the whole chip row after a first pass split it, leaving
the Zume chip stranded under the panel.
170 more codes, 74 with gospel audio. 657 codes carry a Words of Life
link and 872 people groups whose ONLY resource in any pool is that
recording — 78.7 million people — can hear the gospel in their own
language.
Tier 0 is 2,001, from 3,457 when this started: 1,456 groups have been
moved out of "nothing found" by real, verified links. 1,367 of the
gap's 2,456 codes are decided, 56% of the sweep, and the hit rate is
steady at 43% over eight batches.
Provenance exact — 1,246 name GRN as checked, 1,246 decided, none
decided goes unnamed — and all 74 new URLs verified before shipping.
Two claims in shipped metadata had gone false, and both were the kind
a reader trusts precisely because it looks specific.
people-group-resources listed Global Recordings Network under "not
included: requires an API key". Wrong on both halves: GRN is included,
583 codes of it, and it needed no key — 5fish resolves by ISO 639-3
and asks only for a crawl delay. A caveat naming a pool as missing
misleads exactly as much as a stale number when the pool is there. The
refresh now moves it out of that list and records how it was reached,
so the list cannot drift again.
The links table said "the 506 zero-reach rows" and "51 of the 168
codes". The true figures are 1,038 and 492: every source added rows
for languages no pin on this map speaks, and a sentence that counts
something has to be recounted when the something changes. Both are
computed now rather than typed.
Found by sweeping every shipped table's metadata for baked numbers
instead of waiting to trip over one. The surfaces came back clean —
their prose is already computed — so the stale claims were all in the
table meta, which is the part nobody looks at and a CSV carries away.
170 more codes probed, 72 with gospel audio. 583 codes carry a Words
of Life link and 785 people groups whose ONLY resource in any pool is
that recording — 78.3 million people — can hear the gospel in their
own language.
Tier 0 falls 2,172 to 2,088, from 3,457 when this began: the gap has
shrunk by 40%. 1,197 of the gap's 2,456 codes are decided, so the
sweep is now about half done, and the hit rate has settled around 42%
across seven batches.
Provenance exact through the change — 1,078 codes name GRN as checked,
1,078 decided, none decided goes unnamed — and all 72 new URLs
verified before shipping.
"Can hear it, no text" is a list of 2,556 groups. A team is not sent to
a group, it is sent to a country, and nothing aggregated that set —
the existing country table counts the groups with NOTHING, which is a
different population and does not contain one of these rows, because
none of them is tier 0.
154 countries, with two columns that disagree on purpose. Nigeria and
the DRC lead on LANGUAGES, 221 and 103, which is the translation
workload. China and Pakistan lead on PEOPLE, 218 and 195 million,
across far fewer languages. Which number matters depends on whether
you are funding translators or broadcasters, so both are shown and
neither is ranked for the reader.
The aggregate reconciles with its source exactly — 2,556 groups and
1,329,044,699 people both ways — and the basis travels as a column, so
a CSV that outlives this page still says "no text found in the pools
checked" rather than "no text exists".
Built without a browser: the box was low on memory this tick and a
gate that needs chromium was the wrong thing to add to it.
The same drift has now appeared six times, each spelled differently:
negated fields on a line naming "none", a positive hasAny over a
mapped row, a predicate inside a build script, and — found this tick —
a pair of columns no pass had ever touched. A source-level pattern has
to guess how the next one will be written.
Clause N does not guess. It compares the shipped ANSWER against the
pin tier, so it catches the seventh however it is phrased. Measured
when written: people-group-resources.any_resource_found disagreed with
the tier on 194 rows, and its no_resource_found pair contradicted
ITSELF on 7 more, because neither column was in the refresh at all.
Both now move together, 195 and 202 corrected, and the table agrees
with the tier on all 2,103 judgeable rows.
A code with no pin is SKIPPED, not guessed. The tier lives on pins, so
an unpinned code cannot be judged this way — judging it anyway
reported ajp as a defect on the first run, when the row was right and
the check was wrong. That is the failure this repo keeps meeting, so
it is written into the clause rather than left as a comment.
Also corrected there: the table's own note still told readers GRN
answers 403 to every request and had never been searched.
The legacy reconciler reported "nothing to change" and was confidently
wrong: its hasAny predicate never learned the two newest pools, so 122
curated rows — 8.9 million people — still carried heart_has_any=false
for groups the pin index can now reach. A reconciler that cannot see a
source is not reconciling, it is confirming.
Corrected exactly the 122 predicted, and the derived columns moved
with them: status 122, opportunity 93, lbc_carries_resource 69,
aligned 59, gap 29. Gap moves least because it means "nothing in the
heart language AND no in-country bridge either" — most of these have a
bridge, so they were already opportunities rather than gaps, and that
documented meaning is intact.
This was the fifth occurrence of one bug, and the gate written for it
had never looked at scripts — only .vue. Extending it to the build
scripts immediately found a sixth, in the Deaf gap table, which is
latent today because no sign language carries either field: GRN is
deliberately skipped for them and Scripture Earth has none. Fixed
while it is still cheap.
The rule now differs by file because the truth does: a surface must
READ the tier, while a build script COMPUTES it and cannot, so a
script must instead name every pool. Both halves verified against the
real pre-fix lines rather than synthetic ones.
170 more gap codes probed, 84 with gospel audio. 511 codes now carry a
Words of Life link, and 701 people groups whose ONLY resource in any
pool is that recording — 77.6 million people — can hear the gospel in
their own language.
Tier 0 falls 2,270 to 2,172. It was 3,457 when this work began, so the
gap is down by more than a third, and the translation-priority table
grows in step: 2,556 groups now, because every code GRN reaches moves
a group out of "nothing found" and into "can hear it, no text".
1,027 of the gap's codes are decided. Provenance stays exact through
the change — 915 codes name GRN as checked, 915 have been decided,
none decided goes unnamed — and all new URLs were verified before
shipping.
170 more gap codes, 84 with gospel audio. 427 codes now carry a Words
of Life link; 603 people groups whose only resource in any pool is
that recording — 76.4 million people — can hear the gospel in their
own language. Tier 0 falls 2,373 to 2,270, from 3,457 when this began.
859 of the gap's codes decided, provenance exact at 752 claiming GRN,
752 decided, none decided-but-unnamed.
Also measured, rather than assumed: the map really does filter the
table beneath it. Composed on the dashboard, opening Foodo and
pressing "Every resource in Foodo ↓" cuts the table from 7,762 rows to
1 — Foodo has exactly one resource, the Scripture Earth PDF. That was
claimed by the brief and had never been checked end to end.
The translation-priority table tracks the sweep: 2,458 groups now,
up from 2,355, because every code GRN reaches moves a group out of
"nothing found" and into "can hear it, no text".
The map could select the groups that can already hear the gospel but
have no text Scripture. A filter cannot be sorted, exported, or handed
to a committee, and this is precisely the list that gets handed to a
committee. None of these groups appears in "Where Nothing Was Found"
either, because none of them is tier 0 — it is the opposite question.
2,355 groups across 1,224 languages, largest first, with CSV and JSON
export. Each row names what the group DOES have and links to it, so it
is actionable without the map: Western Punjabi, 97 million, "audio
Scripture, the JESUS Film". The pools checked and the pools NOT checked
are columns on every row, because an exported spreadsheet strips the
caveat first and the caveat is the part that keeps this honest.
Fixing the map to agree exposed a real defect in the filter shipped
last tick: it counted 49 SIGN languages among its 2,289. "Can hear the
gospel" is the wrong sentence about a Deaf people group, and recorded
audio is neither what they lack nor what they need — this map already
suppresses the audio chip and the GRN attach for them for that reason.
Both surfaces now exclude them and both report 2,355.
The map could select the 2,289 groups that can hear the gospel but
have no text Scripture; it could not say which of them to weigh first,
and 2,289 dots cannot be read top-down. The gap sheet gains a fifth
tab that ranks them by population and, on each row, names what the
group DOES have — "has audio Scripture, the JESUS Film — no text
found" — so a reader can see whether they are being sent to a
recording or a film before they go.
The tab describes a different population from the other four, so it
does not inherit their sentences: the nothing-found opener, the audio
caveat and the macrolanguage note are all scoped away from it. Its own
paragraph states the bound twice, because the top rows are Western
Punjabi at 97 million and Wu Chinese at 92.5 million, and a reader
skimming those numbers must not come away thinking no text exists in
any variety they speak.
GRN batch four: 170 more codes, 90 with gospel audio. 343 codes now
carry a Words of Life link and tier 0 falls 2,488 to 2,373 — from
3,457 when this work began. 689 of the gap's codes are decided, and
provenance stays exact at 588 claiming GRN, 588 decided, none
decided-but-unnamed.
170 more gap codes probed, 89 with gospel audio — a 52% hit rate,
steady across three batches now. 253 codes carry a Words of Life link
and 385 people groups whose only resource in any pool is that
recording — 71.6 million people — can hear the gospel in their own
language. Tier 0 falls 2,610 to 2,488, from 3,457 when this work
started.
520 of the gap's 2,456 codes are decided. The provenance stays exact
through the change: 434 codes name GRN as checked, 434 have really
been decided, and none that was decided goes unnamed.
The sheet's "checked" line is what tells a reader whether "nothing
found" means anything, and it was wrong in both directions. 5,131
codes omitted Scripture Earth, which had in fact been swept for every
one of them. And 110 codes named GRN as checked when the sweep has
never looked at them — GRN is crawled a batch at a time at the delay
their robots.txt asks for, so 2,100 codes are still unread.
The cause was ordering, the same lesson this file already carries for
the dead-link drop: the pass that normalises provenance ran before the
Scripture Earth and GRN fetchers, so the codes those fetchers create
kept the raw constant. A tidying pass that runs before the thing it
tidies reports a confident answer about a room still filling up. It
now runs after every source attaches, and the count is exact — 282
codes name GRN, 282 have been decided, and none that was decided goes
unnamed.
Scripture Earth is claimed unconditionally because that sweep really
did cover every code this map uses: a code absent from their index is
a checked negative. GRN is claimed per code, and the rest carry
"grn (not yet swept)" in the unchecked list instead.
Clause M of the coverage gate now fails if any code names a pool the
sweep never decided for it. Poison is 13/13.
170 more gap codes probed at the ten-second delay their robots.txt
asks for. 93 hold gospel audio — a 55% hit rate, higher than the first
batch because the sweep runs largest-population first and those are
the languages GRN has always concentrated on.
164 codes now carry a Words of Life link, and 263 people groups whose
ONLY resource in any pool is that recording — 66.7 million people —
can now hear the gospel in their own language. Tier 0 falls 2,746 to
2,610. Largest reached this round: Min Bei Chinese at 11.3 million,
Swiss German at 5.5 million, Huizhou Chinese at 5.4 million.
All new URLs verified before shipping; 350 of 2,456 gap codes decided
so far, and the fetcher resumes where it stopped.
GRN records the gospel as AUDIO for languages with no writing, which is
most of what is left in the gap — and every earlier attempt recorded it
as unreachable. globalrecordings.net sits behind a proof-of-work bot
shield that challenges even robots.txt; that is an access control and
is not worked around. Their own delivery site, 5fish.org, is not
shielded, allows what this reads, and resolves by ISO 639-3 directly.
First 180 gap codes swept: 74 hold gospel audio, a 41% hit rate, and
147 people groups that had nothing now have the gospel in a form they
can receive. Tier 0 falls 2,873 to 2,746.
The host NEVER 404s. A nonsense path returns HTTP 200 and a plausible
geo-located page, so reading 200 as existence would have marked every
code on earth as covered. Existence is read from the page title, and a
negative and a positive control run in band on every run — the fetcher
aborts if a nonsense code ever reads as a real language. Their
robots.txt asks for a ten-second crawl delay, so the sweep is
sequential, capped per run and resumable. Do not add concurrency.
Three sign languages are deliberately left out. GRN's catalogue is
audio; 5fish holding a page titled "Pakistan Sign Language" says they
index the language, not that they have signed video. Attaching it told
20 Deaf groups — 11.5 million people — that gospel audio was available
to them. Unverified, and for that audience useless.
Six places across three surfaces still told the reader GRN answers 403
to everything and had never been searched. That is now false, and a
stale caveat misleads exactly as much as a stale number.
Also here, because adding a source is what exposed it: the charts
profile decided "this group has nothing" a second time, by listing the
resource fields by hand. That list went stale every time a source was
added — 7 languages once, 23 when Scripture Earth landed — so the chart
drew groups as having nothing while the map offered them a working
link. It now reads the tier the pin index already computed, and a new
gate refuses any surface that re-derives it. The gate was checked
against the real pre-fix file, not only a synthetic one.
Send Map, the Bloom cockpit, Flower Mesh, Lang Cluster and Flowers ran in
the Experimental shelf as a 976 KB prebuilt legacy bundle inside a sandboxed
iframe. Their original source survived in the old app-profiles/doxa-upg-neighbor
bundle, and it only imports library pieces that still exist, so it moves here
as-is: the unified hub becomes upg-neighbor.vue and the lenses go in src/.
The hub now picks its opening lens at setup rather than on mount. Switching
on mount tore Send Map down mid-initialisation and threw on every other lens.
The five instance ids stay the same, so existing embed URLs still work, and
the old legacyElement key still maps to a lens.
The legacy sandbox (data/legacy/upg-neighbor and its staging rows) is gone
because nothing loads it any more.
SIL and its translation partners publish Scripture for small languages
the big catalogues skip, which is exactly the population left in the
gap: 2,901 groups had nothing in eBible, Arclight, Door43 or FCBH.
921 codes now carry a Scripture Earth link and 28 groups that had
nothing at all — 339,550 people — have Scripture in their own language
for the first time on this map. Tier 0 falls 2,901 to 2,873.
Most of this source is not what it appears to be, and the fetcher
throws away both false positives rather than shipping them. Their open
index lists 3,477 language directories, but 764 of the ones we can join
are empty stubs: trusting the listing alone would have handed 716
people groups a link to an empty folder. And a "video" directory holds
JESUSFilm-<iso>.txt metadata, not playable film — 1,588 codes have
nothing else, so video alone never qualifies a code. Only PDF, audio,
Scripture App Builder, study notes and SFM text count.
All 921 URLs verified HTTP 200 before shipping, and the artefacts were
opened by hand first: Baka's is 14.4 MB of application/pdf, Foodo's
40.7 MB, and a nonexistent sibling 404s, so a 200 here means a file.
The coverage gate, the verifier and the links table each had to be
taught the new field. Leaving any one of them ignorant would have been
worse than not adding the source: the gate caught all 28 tier changes
as inconsistent, and the links table filed 921 rows under the "other"
publisher — the fallback that exists to make an unscreened domain
impossible to hide. The sheet's "checked" line now names the pool too,
since it is searched.
Its toast has always read "Tap a coloured dot — someone still needs prayer". Tapping one
showed Scripture, film, audio, video, stories, tracts and training, and no way to pray.
doxa.life publishes a page per people group and sibling plugins in this repo already link
to it; this map simply never did. 1,723 groups now carry a "Pray for <group>" action with
the number already praying beside it.
THIS IS THE ONE JOIN HERE THAT IS NOT BY LANGUAGE, and it needed justifying rather than
assuming. Every other source keys on ISO 639-3 because a translation serves everyone who
speaks the language; prayer does not work that way — you pray for a people, in a place. So
this keys on (group name, country), which is a NAME join, the thing this map refuses
everywhere else because names collide.
Allowed only because the key was tested first: on the API side (name, country) is
perfectly unique — 2,107 entries, 2,107 distinct keys, 0 collisions — and on the pin side
12,379 pins give 12,369 distinct keys. The ambiguous ones are DROPPED, not guessed. One
entry was lost that way, and 383 more have no pin here at all.
pray.doxa.life is the fourth host in this bundle that answers 200 with identical bytes for
any URL: /abai-sungai and /zzz-not-a-real-group are both 3,903 bytes. Rendered it does
discriminate — a real slug titles the page "Abai Sungai - App" with 1,863 characters, a
bogus one titles it "Doxa.Life" with zero — but existence comes from the API listing,
which is the publisher's own statement and costs one request rather than 1,723 renders.
The lookup is COMPUTED, not baked into groupAt. groupAt runs the instant a pin is clicked,
so a value read there is whatever had arrived by then and never updates when the lazy
fetch lands — the same shape as the link-verification state that used to hang off
openPin's country branch.
Verified with a negative control: a group in the index renders an anchor whose href
matches the expected slug URL exactly, and German, which is not in it, renders nothing.
My probe reported FAIL twice against correct code by waiting a guessed 900ms; it now waits
for the data. Screenshot read — the Lati, 2,900 people with nothing found in any pool, can
now be prayed for.
languages-by-country is the bridge view: one row per country and language, ranked by
prevalence, flagging which languages could carry a resource to groups that lack one. Its
curated work — prevalence_rank, bridge_candidate, groups_speaking — is the reason it
exists and is untouched.
Its resource flags were not curated, and they had drifted like the other two legacy
tables: 75 rows wrong about Scripture, 39 wrong about whether the language carries
anything at all, 1 about film. That matters more here than elsewhere, because this table
is consulted to CHOOSE a bridge: a language flagged as carrying nothing when it carries
audio Scripture is a bridge somebody was told not to use.
Refreshed from the pin index, which is the same source the map draws. 0 of 613 rows now
disagree, and all 613 still carry their curated columns.
full_bible is deliberately NOT refreshed. The pin index knows a scope only for eBible
rows, so downgrading a curated "full Bible" on that basis would lose information rather
than correct it.
Also recorded rather than acted on: this table covers 175 countries while the map has
242 with pins, so 67 countries and 1,537 people groups have no bridge analysis at all.
That is a gap in curated coverage, not a contradiction — the rows that exist are now
correct — and filling it means doing the prevalence work, not copying numbers across.
gospel-by-country carries 242 countries with real per-country counts, and the map uses
them for the choropleth and the "where the gap concentrates" sheet. The tables profile
had no country table at all, so those numbers lived only inside the map — readable, not
exportable — while every other tab there offers CSV and JSON. A mobiliser deciding where
to send a team cannot work from a sheet they have to screenshot.
Derived, not a second source: every row is read out of gospel-by-country, which is itself
refreshed from the pin index, so the table and the map cannot disagree.
Three columns because they rank differently and each is somebody's question — groups with
nothing, people with nothing, and the share of the country each represents. The default
sort is by groups, and the share column is what makes rows like Vanuatu legible: 79 groups
with nothing out of 114, 69.3%, which ranks ninth by count and first by share. Region is
carried through so the table can be grouped the same way the map's region tab ranks.
Curated columns come through as-is and stay null where the curated analysis does not cover
the country — null, never zero, because zero is a claim this build cannot make.
Verified against the PIN INDEX rather than against the table being tested: 242 countries
with pins, 2,901 groups with nothing, worst is PNG at 469. The rendered tab reports 242
rows and its first row reads Papua New Guinea / PNG / Oceania / 831 / 469 / 56.4, with
650 real cells. No page errors. Screenshot read.
region was empty on all 242 country rows, so the map had no way to answer "what share of
this part of the world is unreached" — only how many groups a country holds and how many
people live in them.
The source carries UNm49Region, and it was verified before being trusted: only 2, 9, 19,
142 and 150 appear — exactly the five UN M49 top-level regions — every country maps to
exactly ONE of them with 0 conflicts, and the five sum to 12,379, the whole corpus. So
the code resolves to a real name. It is backfilled on every row, not just the new ones,
and all 242 now carry a region with none blank.
The rate is a genuinely different answer from the two already on offer:
Oceania 51.2% of its 1,325 groups have nothing — 679 groups — 3.1M people
Africa 30.0% of 3,074 — 923 — 68.2M
Asia 19.3% of 5,073 — 978 — 198.7M
Americas 11.4% of 2,117 — 241 — 6.1M
Europe 10.1% of 790 — 80 — 11.6M
Oceania is half unreached by group and the smallest population of the five; Asia is the
reverse on both. Ranked by rate, because count and population are what the other two tabs
already say and a third copy of either would be noise. All three are offered rather than
one picked for the reader.
The rows are plain divs, not buttons: a region is not somewhere this map can fly to, and
a control that looks clickable and does nothing is worse than a row that does not pretend.
Verified against an offline computation over the same index: all five regions match
exactly on rate, group count and population. The sheet header is now three-way rather
than showing the country prose in region mode. All five profiles still mount clean.
Set out to verify the map's second mode, "Resources found", which had never been tested.
It works: the legend switches, the arithmetic is an exact complement of the gap view — 0
of 170 countries disagreed — and the two modes genuinely repaint, 98/46/12/6 polygons by
band in gap against 85/66/9/2 in coverage.
Proving that took three attempts and the third one found the real defect. Comparing the
fill expression proved nothing, because it is ["get","color"] in BOTH modes — the colour
is baked onto each feature and switching modes rewrites the source data. Comparing the
features instead showed 157 coloured and 5 transparent against 170 rows in the table,
and that mismatch was the thread worth pulling.
The previous refresh of this table only UPDATED rows that already existed, and the table
came from the curated 2,106-record set. So 60 countries carrying pins had no row at all —
150 people groups with nothing found, invisible to every country-level surface. Canada
20, Ghana 15, Timor-Leste 13, Australia 7. 72 countries are now added from the pins, and
0 countries with bare groups are missing; all 242 rows agree with the pins on groups and
no_resource.
Curated columns on the new rows are null, never zero: this build does not know a growth
rate for Canada, and zero is a claim. They are flagged from_pins_only so the different
basis is visible rather than implied. Names come from people-groups-slim's CountryName,
because a row labelled "CAN" renders "CAN" as the sheet's title. UNm49Region was
deliberately NOT used for region — it is a numeric code, and "19" is worse than blank.
One row stays a bare code: Kosovo, whose non-standard KOS has no name in the source, and
inventing one for a single row is not worth it.
The boundary file turns out to hold only 162 polygons and has no Canada, Australia,
Timor-Leste or Taiwan, so this paints five previously-transparent countries and fixes the
rest where it actually shows: clicking a pin in Canada now opens a sheet titled "Canada"
with 304 groups, matching the pins exactly, where before it fell through to a bare ISO
code with no statistics.
The dashboard is the one profile never opened on a phone. Structurally it holds up at
390x844 — no horizontal overflow anywhere in either shadow tree, canvas 390x675, the
table half renders 20 real rows and 60 cells, no page errors. What does not hold up is
what it says.
Under the table, the Pools Caveat read "Pools checked: eBible.org, JESUS Film (Arclight),
Door43/unfoldingWord". On the same screen, visible immediately above it, were rows typed
Audio Scripture, Bible video, Zume Training and Gospel presentation — four pools the
caveat denied having checked. It is the most direct version of a mistake this bundle has
now hit repeatedly: a sentence written by hand goes stale the moment a source is added,
and this one had gone stale four times over.
It is no longer written by hand. The checked list is now counted off the rows themselves,
so it cannot disagree with the table it sits under: "Cru (GodTools), Door43
(unfoldingWord), Faith Comes By Hearing, JESUS Film, PNG.Bible, Zume Training,
eBible.org, eBible.org (mirror)". The NOT-checked half stays prose, because it names
things that are absent and no row can testify to those — GRN, api.bible, the Digital
Bible Library and Progress Bible, each needing a credential or an agreement.
The page subtitle had the same shape of error, offering "scripture, film or audio" over
tables carrying seven media. It now names the question rather than a list that will go
stale again.
Verified on the phone viewport after the change: table half still 20 rows / 60 cells, no
overflow, no page errors, and the rendered caveat lists all eight sources. Screenshot
read.
Only 2 files conflicted in source: package.json and its CLI doc, both taken to
main's refactored gate pipeline (gates:pre/gates:post/build:bundles) after
verifying every check the old inline chain named still runs there. The other 19
were generated: public/assets/tables mirrors keep main's deliberate deletion,
and public/doxa-maps is regenerated by the build that follows.
Every pool here so far is Scripture, film, Bible video or a course. None is a GOSPEL
PRESENTATION — the short translated thing a person actually opens with someone. Cru
publishes those, in the same organisation that makes the JESUS Film, so the doctrine
question is settled the same way the brief settles it for the film. Only their gospel
tracts are included, from a fixed allow-list; the lessons and survey tools are not.
IT CLOSES NO GAP AND SAYS SO. All 94 of these languages already have something, so this
is depth rather than coverage and moves no tier. Tiers are byte-identical at
2901/4767/4711. It reaches 3,270 pins and 3.97bn people.
godtools.org, the obvious host, IS A PARKED DOMAIN. It answers 200 to everything with a
114-byte body, and rendered, every URL — including /zz/nosuchtool-xyzzy — reads
"godtools.org is parked free, courtesy of GoDaddy.com". Shipping links there would have
sent people to a GoDaddy ad.
The real front-end is knowgod.com, and it does serve per-language tracts: /en/kgp reads
"Knowing God Personally", /sw/kgp reads "Kumjua Mungu Kibinafsi". But ONLY once
rendered. By fetch it is a uniform 3,864-byte shell for every URL valid or not — the
third host in this bundle with that shape, after jesusfilm's old ?languageId= and
live.bible.is.
So existence is proved from Cru's own API and never from the page: a (language, tool)
pair exists exactly when the resource's latest-translations intersect that language's
translations. Checked against the browser before being trusted — en/kgp and sw/kgp both
intersect and both render real localised text, and the bogus pair does not intersect. In
band, the verifier's controls are now 7 negative all non-verified and 7 positive all
verified, with a bogus knowgod pair among the negatives. All 94 URLs verified.
Clause I keeps its closed set: Gospel presentation only on knowgod.com, and knowgod.com
only that type. Poison self-test still 12/12. Screenshot read: German shows six distinct
resource types, including "Gospel presentation - Knowing God Personally".
gospel-by-country supplies band and no_resource, which fill every country polygon on the
map. Those were computed on 2026-08-01 over the curated 2,106-record set. The pins drawn
ON TOP of that fill come from the 12,379-pin index. The two disagreed for 135 of 170
countries, and the worst cases are not close:
PNG coloured "critical" from ONE curated group, under 831 pins (56.4% bare -> high)
USA coloured "covered" from three groups, under 623 pins (7.1% bare -> partial)
PHL coloured "covered" from one group, under 156 pins (17.9% bare -> partial)
IDN coloured "critical" from 36 groups, under 669 pins (48.0% -> high)
A reader sees the colour first and the dots second. Telling them a country is covered
while plotting bare groups across it, or critical on the evidence of a single group, is
the map arguing with itself - and the fill is the louder half.
groups, no_resource, pop_no_resource, scripture, film, pct_no_resource and band are now
counted from the pins, under the same band rule as before (critical >=60%, high >=30%,
partial >0, covered 0). growing_unreached, deaths_day and growth are NOT derivable from
the pins - they come from the curated country analysis over a narrower set, the country
sheet already labels them as a different basis, and they are left exactly as they were.
Verified: 0 of 170 countries still disagree with the pins on groups, no_resource or
band. Bands are now 8 critical / 52 high / 100 partial / 10 covered.
The legend was making a claim that stopped being true two changes ago: "Audio is
unchecked for every group here". Faith Comes By Hearing has been searched since. It now
names all five pools that were checked and isolates GRN as the one that cannot be -
403 on every request including its own robots.txt - which is the honest version of the
same warning.
gaps-and-opportunities and people-group-resources predate everything added this flight.
Their curated columns — the bridge-language analysis, internet access, messaging
channels — are the reason they exist and are untouched. Their resource booleans had
drifted into saying things the map disproves:
80 rows heart_has_any=false while the index has a resource (6M people)
317 rows "no scripture" while the index has TEXT Scripture
277 rows the same, for the bridge language
5 rows "no film" while the index has one
2,106 rows has_audio = the string "unknown", written when no audio pool had been
searched. Faith Comes By Hearing has been searched since.
Only the facts the pin index is authoritative for are rewritten. Rebuilding these tables
would have destroyed curated work to fix a few columns.
I GOT THE DERIVED FIELDS WRONG FIRST AND CAUGHT IT BEFORE COMMITTING. `gap` reads
naturally as "no resource in the heart language", and defining it that way changed 416
rows. The table's own meta defines it as "nothing found in the heart language AND no
in-country bridge language carries anything" — my version would have silently discarded
half its meaning while looking like a correction. Every formula is now taken from the
table's documented meaning and was verified to reproduce the existing column on all
2,106 rows BEFORE anything was rewritten: gap, opportunity (which also requires the
bridge to be spoken by more than one group in the country), aligned, and status. With
the right formula, gap moves 12 rows, not 416.
has_audio stays THREE-STATE and never false: true where FCBH publishes audio, "unknown"
otherwise. GRN is the main audio pool and answers 403 to everything, so "no audio
exists" is a claim this build cannot make. 1,297 true, 809 unknown.
Verified after the fact, not assumed: zero remaining contradictions between either
table and the pin index, and all four derived formulas still reproduce their columns
2,106/2,106. Both tables written through the snapshot guard. Tables tab still renders
real cells.
Two tables behind the brief's resources view were describing a different dataset from
the map beside them.
"Where Nothing Was Found" still listed 3,457 groups. The map draws 2,901. Its builder
already used the current tier; it simply had not been re-run since audio Scripture and
Bible video started lifting groups out of tier 0. A mobiliser exporting that tab would
have worked through 556 groups who now have a resource. Regenerated, and it matches the
map exactly.
"The Deaf Gap" was worse, and structurally so. It came from the curated 2,106-record
set and reported 73 sign languages, 120 people groups, 19.35M people. The map draws
150 sign languages, 234 groups, 84.2M people. The tab named for the Deaf gap was
missing more than half of it. Rebuilt from the pins - the same index the map draws, so
the two cannot disagree - and it now measures 150 languages, 234 groups, 84,159,050
people, of which 136 languages / 183 groups / 55,199,840 people have nothing found.
Kept deliberately: the bridge rule, verbatim, because it is the most important sentence
in the table - a sign language is bridged ONLY by another sign language, and text or
audio in a spoken language does not reach a Deaf community. That is also why the
related-variety reasoning added for spoken macrolanguages must never be applied to
these rows. Private-use codes are counted rather than hidden: 40 of these languages
carry qaa-qtz codes that no resource pool indexes, so "nothing found" for them is a
statement about the join as much as about the world, and each such row says so.
MY FIRST VERSION OF THIS SHIPPED AN EMPTY TABLE AND MY PROBE PASSED IT. DataTable
renders a { meta, columns, rows } document and the rebuild omitted `columns`, so the
tab drew its header, its "234 rows" caption and five pages of pagination over a
completely empty body. The probe had asserted the caption - a number the page prints
about itself, which is not evidence it drew anything. It now counts rendered rows AND
cells, and is proven against the defect: with `columns` removed it reports 50 row
shells and 0 cells and FAILS; restored, it passes. The row count alone would still have
missed it.
Verified: both tabs' captions match offline counts from the same index (2,901 and 234),
both render real cells, no page errors. Screenshot read.
Read top-down, the gap list sent you to "Chinese, Jinyu - 60,310,000 people - nothing
found", then "Chinese, Gan - 41,280,000". Both statements are true about those ISO
codes and both are misleading as priorities: ISO 639-3 files them under the
macrolanguage zho beside cmn, Mandarin, which has Scripture, film, audio and training
here. Measured across the whole map: 84 pins covering 140M people sit at "nothing
found" while a sibling variety of their own ISO macrolanguage carries resources.
Those groups now carry a related-variety note, on the pin sheet and inline in the
ranked list, because the list is the thing that gets read top-down. 63 codes have one.
WHAT IT DOES NOT SAY. It is not a claim of mutual intelligibility, and the wording
refuses to imply one - spoken Jinyu and spoken Mandarin are not mutually intelligible;
what they share is a written standard. Only ISO's own relation is asserted, the reader
is told exactly that, and it changes NO tier and closes NO gap. Tiers are byte-identical
at 2901/4767/4711. The chips still read "none found", because that is still true.
The macrolanguage table is fetched from SIL rather than transcribed, and written
through the snapshot guard like every other catalogue.
Also corrected: the gap list header still said "Audio has never been searched for any
of them". That stopped being true when Faith Comes By Hearing was added, and a stale
caveat misleads exactly as much as a stale number. It now says audio HAS been searched
and these groups have none there either, with GRN still named as the one pool nobody
can look in.
And a gate defect that produced three runs of false signal. verify-gospel-map adopted
any server answering 200 on the default port. Port 4173 turned out to be held by an
unrelated python3 process from another worktree, so the gate reported on a build that
was not this one - first a PASS, then a mount timeout that looked exactly like a
regression in code that had nothing to do with it. Answering 200 is not the same
question as serving this tree. It now fingerprints the served bundle against the bytes
in public/ and refuses to adopt a server whose build differs, starting its own instead.
Proven: it now prints "serves a DIFFERENT build than public/ - not adopting it",
starts its own, and passes.
Screenshot read: the ranked list shows "related: Chinese, Mandarin has resources"
under Jinyu, Gan and Min Bei, and correctly nothing under Deaf Chinese or Deaf
Pakistani, which have no macrolanguage sibling.
A full pass is ~6,500 requests over a quarter of an hour, and it was killed three
times by system memory pressure - twice at around 2,500 and once at 1,000. Results
lived only in memory until the final write, so each kill threw away every request it
had made. The file on disk survived, which is correct, but the pass never landed and
the bandwidth was spent for nothing.
Every record now carries `at`, the moment it was checked, and the table is written
after each batch. A killed run loses at most one batch, and rerunning with
VERIFY_MAX_AGE_H skips anything already stamped. Writing mid-pass is safe because a
checkpoint only ADDS to or REFRESHES records - it can never shrink the table, which is
the failure the snapshot guard exists for elsewhere.
Proven rather than asserted: killed mid-pass, 300 stamped records survived on disk;
the restart reported "resuming - 600 URL(s) already checked within 24h, 5876 left to
do" and skipped them. The fourth memory kill then arrived unplanned during the real
run and cost 500 records instead of 1,900.
With the pass finally complete, the point of it: bible.is verification switched from a
body-size heuristic to their API two changes ago, but only the URLs added since had
been re-checked. 2,609 of 2,868 records still asserted "verified" on the older basis.
All 2,708 now come from /api/bibles, and none from the heuristic.
The last 160 were neither shipped nor broken - leftovers from filesets no build has
referenced since the FCBH ranking changed, quietly carrying the old method. A full
pass now prunes any record for a URL that nothing ships and nothing proved dead, so
the table means exactly one thing: every URL this map currently ships, plus the
history of everything ever proven dead. Broken records are never pruned; forgetting a
dead link is how it gets shipped again.
That prune sat behind an early exit that fired whenever nothing was stale, so the
first run to reach it reported success and pruned nothing. Removed.
Table: 6,476 records, 6,397 verified, 74 broken and dropped, 5 uncheckable, 0
unstamped, 0 on the old method.
136 of the 150 sign languages here have no resource at all, across 234 people groups
and 84,159,050 people. This tick searched for more rather than assuming, and the answer
is that there are none to find in the open catalogues:
Arclight / JESUS Film 14 sign-language entries across 13 ISO codes - every one of
them was ALREADY in this index
Faith Comes By Hearing none at all, in 3,602 rows
deaf.bible 200, but a 3,894-byte app shell
deafbible.com the same 3,894-byte shell
door.international 200, 114 bytes
So the gap closes through an agreement with Deaf Bible Society or DOOR International,
not through more searching, and every sign-language group now says that in those words
instead of leaving a reader to assume somebody simply had not looked yet.
Two real honesty defects went with it. The provenance line claimed "ebible, arclight,
door43, fcbh" as CHECKED for a Deaf group - eBible and Door43 are text and FCBH is
audio, none of which serves a Deaf group - and named GRN, an AUDIO pool, as the thing
still unchecked, while omitting the two organisations that actually publish for the
Deaf. A sign language now reads "arclight (14 sign languages, all captured), fcbh
(none)" as checked and "deaf_bible_society, door_international - both key-gated" as not.
And the sheet showed a Deaf group an "Audio - none at FCBH, GRN unsearchable" chip:
noise about a medium they cannot use, pushing the one line that matters further down.
It is suppressed for sign languages. Where FCBH does hold something for them it is
text, and that link still shows.
Verified against the data rather than the prose: 150 sign languages, 13 with a film, 0
with a text Scripture, 0 with both - so the standing claim that none yet has both is
still true - and 84,159,050 is the population the page renders. Screenshot read: Deaf
Nicaraguan shows the exhausted-catalogue paragraph naming both ministries, with no
audio chip.
Jehovah's Witnesses publish extensively in sign language and remain excluded. The size
of a gap is not a reason to relax the doctrinal filter.
